Watch any documentary and discoveries will dominate the screen time. You'll learn one thing after another in rapid fashion. That's the typical format for a documentary. Discoveries are just as important in novels and movies. They provide the skeleton (or framework) of the entire adventure.
There are three types of discoveries in storytelling:
- Explaining - these are simple details that literally explain aspects of the plot without furthering the story.
- Pushing - these are events that force a character in a new direction, or force the storyline in a new direction.
- Plotting - these are deliberate decisions made by characters to take the story in a new direction or down a specific avenue.
Without discoveries, stories would go nowhere. There must be a pushing or plotting discovery in order to give the characters motivation and direction.
